Fiona (FitBritMom) asks @ 00:21:39 - What Are The Best Fat Loss Supplements? Could you give your expert opinion on cissus extract for joint health and weight management. She is currently training for a marathon, is turning 40 next year and has a family history of arthritis. Is cissus worth it or is there something else she should be taking instead? ~ In my response to Fiona, I reference joint support supplement Capraflex and also the Pacific Elite Fitness Fat Loss Pack. I also discuss Cissus Quadrangularis supplements inflammation and the website InflammationFactor.com.

Steve asks @ 00:31:57 - What To Do About Worn Cartilage He is a former overweight substance abuser turned ultra runner that has had meniscus surgery twice, wears a knee brace, foam rolls, has done all the strengthening exercises for his legs and glutes, has done acupuncture and still has knee pain. Feels like it is bone on bone. He really wants to be able to run again, is there anything else he can do? He really wants to set a good example for his kids and seems to think he will slip back into his previous life if he can't run. ~ In my response to Steve, I mention "The Elliptigo".

Eric says @ 00:39:38 - Controlling Blood Sugar During Ketosis Is it necessary to do the blood sugar hacks (like using a lot of cinnamon and bitters) if you are in ketosis? And clearly another Eric Is also wondering if you have noticed the "ketogenic breath"? ~ In my response to Eric, I mention Bitter Melon Extract. I also mention Charcocaps and these Metron breath ketone measuring devices.

Bob asks @ 00:48:39 - Natural Remedies for Exercise Induced Asthma Do you have any suggestions for some diagnosed with EIB (exercise induced bronchial spasms)? Benadryl seems to help but he doesn't want to take that all the time. ~ In my response, I mention this asthma podcast with Dr. Minkoff. I also recommend the Autoimmune Paleo diet and this TrainingPeaks autoimmune diet. And the natural anti-histamine fish oil.

Anonymous asks @ 00:56:33 - Does ADHD Medication Affect Performance? He is a 50-year-old athlete who takes 20mg of Adderall for ADHD and also .5mg Clonazepam for sleep and anxiety. He is wondering how these might be effecting his performance (for good or bad). Also, are there ways to use more natural substances to ween off of these medications? ~ In my response, I mention the GAPS diet for ADHD. I also mention my recommended Brain Supplements and Brain Add-Ons, including: -500-1000mg Aniracetam combined with 1-2g Phosphatidylcholine, used sparingly before high mental demanding activities -2-6g/day triglyceride based fish oil – recommend SuperEssentials -Acetyl-L-carnitine – 500mg, 1x/day – recommend 1-2 servings “NutraRev” per day -Alpha-lipoic-acid, 100mg, 1x/day - recommend 1-2 servings “NutraRev” per day -For depression/lack of motivation – 3000mg Tyrosine + 300mg 5-HTP -It is HIGHLY recommended that you do neurotransmitter testing before experimenting with these particular supplements, but for neurotransmitter balance (behavioral issues, depression, etc.), you can start with 4 NeuroReplete (to balance catecholamines and increase serotonin), twice daily (in the AM and at 4 PM) with 2 CysReplete (for L-Cysteine to increase catecholamine synthesis or when using D-5 Mucuna), three times daily (the first dose at noon). Read the Kalish Method book or talk to Ben before experimenting too much with this stuff.

Gina says @ 01:11:45 - How To Heal Injured Ribs Fell off a chair and bruised (maybe fractured) her ribs (says she was not drunk). Went to a chiropractor, told him about her ribs and he still did a spinal adjustment and re-injured her ribs. What do you recommend to heal them as fast as possible - wants to get back to spinning, running, getting her HR up but can't really breathe right now or move her right side. ~ In my response I recommend a Rib Belt.

Listener Q&A:A donate button that reads - keep the podcasts coming

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

How To Use Hot Baths For Performance -- Michael wrote in to ask @ 00:26:56 In your recent podcast, you mentioned that taking a 20-minute hot bath two days before a hard effort or race could be beneficial. Is there anything to the frequency of this practice? Currently, I'm training for for an iron-distance triathlon, so every Saturday is a long ride followed by a transition run (and Sunday is a long run). If I did a soak EVERY Thursday, would that be too much... or to a degree that the practice would lose its effectiveness as you reported?

Natural Remedies for Dry Eyes -- Jenny says @ 00:34:09 She has had a problem with her eyes being really dry. She has used drops and increased her omega3s. That didn't help and it has started to effect her vision as well. Her doctor told her that she needs to use a prescription eye drop for the rest of her life - and she really doesn't want to do that! Do you have any tips on getting her eyes not to be so dry. ~ In my response, I recommend SuperEssentials fish oil for dry eyes. I also recommend this portable humidifier.

How To Enhance Vision -- Benjamin wrote in to ask @ 00:42:15 I just found out from my optometrist that I may need vision correction, and of course, they're recommending I go with contact lenses or prescription glasses. But I'm interested in whether there are natural ways to fix your vision or enhance your eyesight without necessarily using glasses or contact lenses. ~ In my response to both Jenny and Benjamin, I discuss The Vision Gym.

How Your Feet Affect Your Butt -- Jim says @ 00:49:28 He has been rolling his feet out with a golf ball lately (after some hard training and racing) and experienced some extreme glute spasms later in the day while doing some yard work. Could the two be related? ~ In my response I talk about Glute Imbalances article Bret Contreraras.

High Heart Rates on a Ketogenic Diet -- Ketoman says @ 00:59:15 He follows a ketogenic diet and checks his heart rate regularly. His HR in the morning is mid-to-low 50s. But lately he has noticed that when he does intervals (running or on the bike) that his HR goes bonkers (into the 180s) and his tires out quickly later in the day. Could it be a lack of carbohydrate for a workout that takes him out of zone 2 later in the day? ~ In my response, I reference this good article about how cutting carbs doesn't decrease strength/power and also the podcast on ketogenesis with Jimmy Moore.

Strength Training For Trail Runners -- Terry says @ 01:09:07 Is looking for some workout advice for his 17-year-old trail running son who wants to go to the gym. ~ In my response, I recommend this Trail Running Terror plan from TrainingPeaks.

How Your Ears Affect Your Muscles -- Troy says @ 01:16:32 For years massage therapists have told him that his left side it very tight (like massaging a brick) and they don't know why (he is active and spends time stretching). He is nearly deaf in his left ear and is wondering if that could be causing some of the tightness. He would like to hear your thoughts on that. ~ In my response to Troy, I reference my interview with Eric Cobb from Z-Health and my article on balance for athletes.

Listener Q&A:A donate button that reads - keep the podcasts coming

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Aja says @ 00:24:49 She is getting ready to compete in a body building competition, bikini division. The prep is pretty extreme so she wants to minimize the damage to her body. She usually likes to go the holistic route but wants to know if you think BCAAs are harmful or helpful. Are there other supplements she should be taking?

~ In my response, I tell her Aja to use liver and thyroid supplements, but you need to be very careful with the source of that dessicated liver and thymus gland. Standard Process thyroid is decent at around two tablets a day and then for liver look for Argentinian and organic. NOW Foods dessicated liver powder is good for this, at 1 rounded tablespoon per day. I also recommend the Muscle Gain Pack and supplements for low cortisol/high progesterone from the Sara Gottfried interview. Supplements for high cortisol: Omega 3 and Phosphatidylserine Supplements for low progesterone: Natural Vitamin C supplement, Saffron, Chasteberry.

Avi says @ 00:34:11 He did back to back marathons. The first one he kept his heart rate in his "recovery zone" (10 beats below his MAF). The second one he just ran "comfortably" (without a HRM). He has recovered very quickly (by Wednesday he felt like he could run again). He feels like he has recovered better from this double marathon than he has from his previous harder efforts. Why was he able to recover so quickly?

~ In my response, I recommend episode #218, about how to recover as fast as possible after a marathon.

Jenny says @ 00:41:26 How much wine do you think is healthy, safe and ok for managing weight? She weighs 120lbs and is 5'6" and would like to know how much wine is ok to have in any given week? What is a good guideline?

Rob says @ 00:48:46 He is currently drinking a "spotted cow" ale and is wondering if you, Ben, drink any sort of beer at all? He understands that it is not the greatest for you but there are a bunch of running events that have beer associated with it in one way or another. Can it be all bad?

~ In my response to Rob, I mention this NOW Foods gluten digesting enzyme.

Jose says @ 00:57:59 He has very dry knuckles, skin around his scalp and eyebrows. It comes and goes but when it comes he gets big flakes coming off his scalp, very dry skin on his hands and red blotches around his eyebrows. He heard on a podcast that the fluoride in water can be very hard on the skin. Is there anything he can do with supplementation or diet to help control this? ~ In my response, I recommend Dr. Minkoff's metal-free and also the podcast Jessa and I did on the Flouride Deception.

Kyle says @ 01:04:49 He tested his blood glucose prior to a 45 minute run and it was 88mg/dL. The average during the run was 98mg/dL. He is wondering if there is an optimal blood glucose level for running? If so, how would he go about finding his? He would like to experiment with different food and fueling at 5k to half marathon pace. Any suggestions?

Yessica says @ 01:12:56 Her daughter has MRSA and a fungal growth (due to excessive antibiotics) in her ear. She was very happy to stumble across your website with all the natural remedies. Do you have any further recommendations?

~ In my response, I reference the episode how safe are you from this creeping killer that lives in gyms.

Todd says @ 01:18:19 He is wondering, along the same lines as the very popular "hair loss" episode on the iTunes album, what would you recommend to reduce or slow down grey hair? ~ In my response, I mention Ocean's Alive phytoplankton.

Davynavy says @ 01:25:01 He has underwater headphones that he likes to use while swimming and was wondering if Ben might create some swim coaching audio?

~ In my response I mention SwimSmooth, H2o Audio - iTrain and Audio Fuel - Swim Faster. Also PEAR.

Anonymous asks @ 00:27:31 Oral Contraceptives and weight gain? She has recently switched over to a new pill that is higher in estrogen (she was diagnosed with low estrogen) and is wondering if the weight gain is psychological or if there is something to it? ~ In my response, I recommend the books The Hormone Cure and The Pill.

Avi says @ 00:39:12 He recently listened to the podcast episode you did with the creator of the Earth Pulse. He is wondering what the difference is between that and the earthing mat that Dave Asprey uses. There is a large cost difference but it sounds like they can be used in similar ways. ~ In my response, I reference the Earthpulse and Greenwave filters. Colin asks @ 00:49:04 Looking for supplements that will help with muscle spasms. He's been having trouble running downhill. His leg gets a sharp twinge in his vastus laterus/medialus and rectus femerus. Fred asks @ 00:56:52 He has been doing the Beach Body Insanity workouts and is wondering when they say to "engage your core" and "use those abs" what does that really mean? Do you have any guidance on how to "engage your abs" correctly. ~ In my response, I refer to the article How To Breathe The Right Way.

Gabriel says @ 01:04:16 First he reminds us to wash our hands well after applying topical magnesium - especially before you touch your sore nipples. Second, he has flat feet and the running stores always recommend very heavy shoes with a lot of support but those shoes hurt his knees. He finds he runs best in very light shoes. What would you recommend for flat feet? ~ In my response to Gabriel, I mention www.skorarunning.com and How Start Running Barefoot.

Matt asks @ 01:13:54 He has a lot of questions about protein: What are your thoughts on the use of soy protein in Hammer Nutrition's Perpetum (used instead of whey to avoid the overproduction of ammonia), during long endurance events what do you recommend that is both a good carb source mixed with a good protein source (UCAN Superstarch mixed with secondary protein?), also how much protein per hour do you recommend for a longer race (like an Ironman)? ~ In my response to Matt, I recommend the Master Amino Pattern.

Stu wrote @ 01:22:29 I have a good mate who is recovering from a mild stroke, and I was wondering if you have covered this topic in a previous blog or podcast. What advice would you give in relation to nutrition and is there anything in particular that can improve his health? ~ In my response to Stu, I mention TianChi. I also recommend: D-RiboseCoenzyme Q-10Vitamin B6Vitamin B12Fish OilGinkgo BilobaTaurineVinpocetine.
