Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Can Qigong lower your cortisol?

Craig says @ 00:29:58The folks over at SweeBeat recommended that he try Qigong to help with some sympathetic dominance. It seems to be really helping his numbers on the app as well as his general well being. He wants to know what your opinion is of Qigong. He also wanted to recommend people try the iPad app "Healthy with Simple Qigong".

How to build muscle and endurance at the same time

Chuck says @ 00:37:12Just got hired as a personal trainer at a gym and wants to "look more the part" (put on some muscle) but doesn't want to sacrifice his triathlon endurance training. Would it help to take Creatine? Should the Creatine Monohydrate be blended with beta alanine and citrulline malate?

~ In my response to Chuck, I recommend my protocol at http://www.Tri-Ripped.com and the Muscle Gain Pack. I also discuss: -20-25g portions of DEEP30 protein (whey) or LivingProtein (vegan) spread throughout day, at 0.7-0.8 grams per pound body weight. -Creatine – 0.3g/kg bodyweight for 5-7 days followed by 5g/day. No need to cycle. Recommend Kreaceps capsules. -Carnitine – 750mg-2,000mg/day – in 2 doses. Recommend Nutrarev. -Citrulline – 6-8g, 30-60 minutes before exercise. Recommend Citruvol. -Beta-Alanine – 2-5g, 30-60 minutes before exercise. Recommend NOW Foods. -BCAA’s – 10-20g every 60-90 minutes during exercise. Recommend Recoverease. -Daily serving of concentrated greens (to balance pH). Recommend Enerprime (capsule), Capragreens (low calorie powder), Supergreens (meal replacement powder), or cycling between all three.

The ALCAT test for food allergies

Jenny says @ 00:52:42 She would like your opinion on the ALCAT Food Sensitivity Test. She had it done and then heard some controversial opinions about its validity. She was going to start changing her diet based on the test but now doesn't know if it is worthwhile. ~ In my response to Jenny, I discuss this ALCAT test.

How to get abs like Magic Mike

Morgan says @ 01:03:41 He is 43-years-old, 6'3" and lean. He has been using your Magic Mike ab exercises(planks) to build his abs but feels like he is plateauing. What should his next step be, as the planking gets easier and easier?

How to use oil of oregano

Tanya says @ 01:11:19 She just got over Bronchitis last month and now has an upper respiratory viral infection. She has been taking oil of oregano oil twice a day and is wondering how long she should take it for and is twice a day is enough? ~ In my response to Tanya, I mention http://www.BenGreenfieldFitness.com/oregano

The best workouts for building speed and endurance at the same time

Will says @ 01:18:28 He is a fast sprinter that struggles to run anything longer than 5k. He is looking for tips to build his endurance without losing his speed. ~ In my response, I recommend my enhanced breathing protocol and the Compex.

In this premium podcast with Ben Greenfield, Ben answers the following questions about ketosis, Ironman training, nutrition and more:
  • Do you use bitter melon to help buffer blood sugar spikes in a effort to continue producing blood ketones? If yes, how important is the timing of taking the bitter melon for this and how much do you take each time?
  • Have you had any breaks from ketosis where you carb binge?
  • Please let us know about your experiences with oxaloacetate -- most importantly about the safety of it and how much (in your opinion) it boosted your performance.
  • I'm doing your TriathlonDominator.com plan, and am curious as to how you typically train right now... Are you still doing predominantly H.I.I.T. with long Z2 efforts sprinkled in?
  • How much does it cost you a month to eat that way? Carbs are so cheap and yummy.
  • Is there any advantage to adding hard to find meat like lamb and bison to my diet?
  • What are your thoughts on barefoot/minimalist  running? ( thinking performance & injury prevention)
  • Do you recommend anything for me in my first 5K? So far I’ve been working out for the last 2 months, 6 days a week, eating ok, I do cheat but I just pray I make it to the end.
  • What do you think of Ezekiel bread? I haven’t heard much, but I love bread and people say it is better for you.
  • I just read some good protein things with brewer’s yeast? Yay or nay?

Tamsin and I also talk about:

-Finding the ideal balance between getting enough strength, and having too much muscle...

-Whether endurance training hurts your heart, and the best way to to test if your heart is OK...

-The diet and supplements that Tamsin uses...

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Does Fish Oil Cause Prostate Cancer? - Kelsey and Morimasa both asked @ 00:20:56 The headline "Fish oils may raise prostate cancer risks, study confirms (NBC News)" grabbed a lot of people's attention. What is your opinion on this study? ~ In my response, I mention SuperEssentials fish oil.

Are Body Fat Scales Accurate? - Body Fat says @ 00:28:48 She is curious how accurate body fat measuring gadgets and scales actually are. The one she used asked her age, height and weight and then she held on to two hand sensors for a minute. It told he she was 15% body fat (she is 25 and weighs 135-140lbs)... is that a good target or is that too low/too high? ~ In my response, I recommend the article "How To Measure Body Fat", the Body Metrix Ultrasound system and this episode of Endurance Planet.

Is Milk Healthy? - Jim says @ 00:40:48 Would like to know how lactose is processed by the body. How is it different from glucose, sucrose and fructose? How does it effect insulin levels and blood sugar levels? Also can you touch on IGF? A big portion (50-90%) of his carb intake is from milk sugar (2 to 3 gallons a week of grass fed, non-homogenized, pasteurized) should he change that? He has no issues with dairy.

How To Use A Standing Workstation - Standing Desk says @ 00:50:28 She uses a standing work station (for 4-6 hours a day) and has noticed that her recovery time after a hard workout has been drastically lengthened since she started standing. Is there a scientific reason for that or is it all in her head? ~ In my response, I recommend an inversion table and 110% Compression gear (use 10% discount code GREENFIELD).

What To Eat Before Surgery - Steve says @ 00:56:29 He is scheduled for slap-tear surgery on his right shoulder just 3 days after IM Steelhead 70.3. Is there anything he should do in the 3 days between the race and the surgery? He doesn't want to go into surgery too beat up. Any advice for not gaining weight during the recovery period would be appreciated as well. ~ In my response, I recommend loading on proteolytic enzymes like Recoverease prior to surgery and also taking Capraflex post surgery at 12 per day. I recommend this Recovery Pack. I also recommend this free e-book "How To Recover Like Wolverine from X-Men" and smell sticks for appetite control along with greens, amino acids, MPX100 and coconut oil.

How To Run Downhill - Tim says @ 01:08:26He is currently training for a half marathon (starts at 9,500 feet of elevation ending at 12,000 feet). It's a very technical course with some very steep downhills on a road. He was pretty beat up by it last year and is looking for some ways to go a little faster, lessen the impact of the downhill and fuel for this race.

Listener Q&A:

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Testimonial from Chris Hughes @ 00:23:14 He's loving his custom training plan from Ben and can't wait to race Ironman Canada.

Can You Still Exercise When Recovering From Overtraining? - Mark says @ 00:27:46 He has been diagnosed with early stage over-training syndrome and was prescribed 1 month to 1.5 months of rest and recovery (he has been training for 7 years straight). He is wondering what he can do to speed his recovery along (supplements, stretching, mobility exercises, resistance training). ~ In my response to Mark, I recommend this article on overtraining recovery.

How To Push Yourself While Racing - Brett says @ 00:39:32 She is wondering if you have any tips on how to go harder in the beginning and middle or races and workouts? She feels like she is "saving herself" for the last push of a race or workout. ~ In my response to Brett, I mention how Andy Potts breathes before a race.

What Is The Best Blood Test? - Julia says @ 00:48:58 She usually takes 3 to 4 days after running or a spin class (5 days after resistance work) to feel like working out again. Could this be a diet or nutrition issue that is causing her to recover so slowly? ~ In my response to Julia, I recommend a micronutrient analysis - specifically the ION Profile w/40 Amino Acids-METAMETRIX KIT. I also recommend the Longevity test and my article on how to recover quickly from workouts.

How To Fix Exercise Induced Anemia - Ken says @ 00:57:01 At a recent checkup at the doctor he found out that although his hematocrit and hemoglobin levels are normal, his red blood cell size is on the low side of normal (mean carpuscular volume) and his ferritin is about 50% of normal. He is not yet anemic but he is headed that direction. He has some mild hemorrhoids but they do not bleed. He had a colonoscopy that was normal. No ulcers. He is an avid triathlete and is wondering if the sport may have caused this issue. ~ In my response to Ken, I recommend he listen to "Legally Increase Your Hematocrit & Oxygen Levels". He wants to build size and strength but he really likes to get the strength boost that leads to better size gains. Do you feel like you're just not normal when you miss your workout?

Do you get grumpy when you skip your planned physical activity?

Do you sometimes sacrifice work and relationships to be able to squeeze in an exercise session?

Are you addicted to the feeling you get during or after a long run or bike ride or weight lifting workout?

Is this stuff normal, and is it OK to be "addicted to exercise"?

In today's podcast episode with "The Long Run" author Mishka Shubaly (pictured right), Mishka and I explore exercise addiction, and whether it is OK to be addicted to exercise.

Who is Mishka Shubaly?

After receiving an expensive MFA in Fiction from Columbia University, Mishka realized he was more interested in playing music in dive bars than writing. He lived out of a Toyota minivan for a year, touring nonstop, and has shared the stage with artists like The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Decemberists among others.

His Kindle Singles for Amazon have all been bestsellers. He writes true stories about drink, drugs, disasters, desire, deception and their aftermath. His work has been praised for its grit, humor, fearlessness and heart. The book "The Long Run" is his mini-memoir detailing his transformation from alcoholic drug abuser to sober ultrarunner.

Mishka Shubaly lives in Brooklyn where he writes music and plays bass for a band called the Freshkills.

During our interview, I ask Mishka:

-How does the experience you feel during, say, a run compare from a psychological standpoint to how you felt when drinking or using drugs?

-Because of things like the runner's high and endorphin release, do you think that people with "addictive personalities" have a greater predisposition towards endurance sports?

-Do you think that positive addictions like exercise can be taken too far?

-What are your top tips for people who find themselves potentially addicted to exercise, or working out to the extent to which it might damage their body or detract from their relationships or job?

Do you have your own questions, comments, feedback or thoughts about whether it is OK to be addicted to exercise? Leave your thoughts at http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/?p=14483 and be sure to grab Mishka's book for $1.99.
