In this premium podcast with Ben Greenfield, Ben answers the following questions about ketosis, Ironman training, nutrition and more:
  • Do you use bitter melon to help buffer blood sugar spikes in a effort to continue producing blood ketones? If yes, how important is the timing of taking the bitter melon for this and how much do you take each time?
  • Have you had any breaks from ketosis where you carb binge?
  • Please let us know about your experiences with oxaloacetate -- most importantly about the safety of it and how much (in your opinion) it boosted your performance.
  • I'm doing your TriathlonDominator.com plan, and am curious as to how you typically train right now... Are you still doing predominantly H.I.I.T. with long Z2 efforts sprinkled in?
  • How much does it cost you a month to eat that way? Carbs are so cheap and yummy.
  • Is there any advantage to adding hard to find meat like lamb and bison to my diet?
  • What are your thoughts on barefoot/minimalist  running? ( thinking performance & injury prevention)
  • Do you recommend anything for me in my first 5K? So far I’ve been working out for the last 2 months, 6 days a week, eating ok, I do cheat but I just pray I make it to the end.
  • What do you think of Ezekiel bread? I haven’t heard much, but I love bread and people say it is better for you.
  • I just read some good protein things with brewer’s yeast? Yay or nay?

As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick".

Anonymous asks @ 00:27:31 Oral Contraceptives and weight gain? She has recently switched over to a new pill that is higher in estrogen (she was diagnosed with low estrogen) and is wondering if the weight gain is psychological or if there is something to it? ~ In my response, I recommend the books The Hormone Cure and The Pill.

Avi says @ 00:39:12 He recently listened to the podcast episode you did with the creator of the Earth Pulse. He is wondering what the difference is between that and the earthing mat that Dave Asprey uses. There is a large cost difference but it sounds like they can be used in similar ways. ~ In my response, I reference the Earthpulse and Greenwave filters. Colin asks @ 00:49:04 Looking for supplements that will help with muscle spasms. He's been having trouble running downhill. His leg gets a sharp twinge in his vastus laterus/medialus and rectus femerus. If he limps for half a kilometre or so he is able to start shuffling again but he has to be very careful or the spasm will come back. ~ In my response to Colin, I mention: Transdermal magnesiumTrace mineralsRumble Roller.

Fred asks @ 00:56:52 He has been doing the Beach Body Insanity workouts and is wondering when they say to "engage your core" and "use those abs" what does that really mean? The people in the video seem to be sucking their guts way in but he is concerned that will impeded proper deep breathing. Do you have any guidance on how to "engage your abs" correctly. ~ In my response, I refer to the article How To Breathe The Right Way.

Gabriel says @ 01:04:16 First he reminds us to wash our hands well after applying topical magnesium - especially before you touch your sore nipples. Second, he has flat feet and the running stores always recommend very heavy shoes with a lot of support but those shoes hurt his knees. He finds he runs best in very light shoes. What would you recommend for flat feet? ~ In my response to Gabriel, I mention www.skorarunning.com and How Start Running Barefoot.

Matt asks @ 01:13:54 He has a lot of questions about protein: What are your thoughts on the use of soy protein in Hammer Nutrition's Perpetum (used instead of whey to avoid the overproduction of ammonia), during long endurance events what do you recommend that is both a good carb source mixed with a good protein source (UCAN Superstarch mixed with secondary protein?), also how much protein per hour do you recommend for a longer race (like an Ironman)? ~ In my response to Matt, I recommend the Master Amino Pattern.

Stu wrote @ 01:22:29 I have a good mate who is recovering from a mild stroke, and I was wondering if you have covered this topic in a previous blog or podcast. What advice would you give in relation to nutrition and is there anything in particular that can improve his health? ~ In my response to Stu, I mention TianChi. I also recommend: D-RiboseCoenzyme Q-10Vitamin B6Vitamin B12Fish OilGinkgo BilobaTaurineVinpocetine.

Craig asks @ 00:32:38 After listening to the interview with Dr Cobb, he was wondering if Lasik (laser) Eye surgery might positively effect performance. ~ In my response to Craig, I mention the Z-Health interview and the Bates Method.

Ian asks @ 00:42:27 His father has Restless Legs. Every night when he goes to bed his legs and shoulders twitch. He doesn't take any supplements but he does have lowish thyroid. Would like to know what he should be eating or taking. Could this be an inflammatory issue? ~ In my response, I recommend: Magnesium lotion, Floradix, Full spectrum antioxidant with Vitamin C and E, such as LifeShotz, Bitter melon extract, Valerian Root, Folic acid, Near Infrared, and Fish oil.

Sidestitch says @ 00:53:10 She gets a left sided stitch when she drinks more than 4oz of water on a long run (she also gets an annoying sloshing feeling) and also at the end of shorter more intense sessions, if she has eaten less than 2 hours before. What's up with that and how can she stop it? Also, is there an easy way to find topics that have been covered on past podcasts? ~ This response can be found as part of the Ben Greenfield Fitness Top Hits, Vol. 1.

Jim says @ 01:13:17 He is 46 years old and has been performing fasted workouts for the last 25 years. Lately he has been keeping an eye on his glucose levels due to a fasted glucose test of 129 and an A1C of 4.8. He noticed that during his hard fasted workouts his blood glucose increases up to 35 points. He has increased his cinnamon intake, is only eating carbs after workouts and is supporting his liver with bitter melon. He is curious if there is a way of quantifying that 35 point rise in terms of calories released by the liver. ~ In my response to Jim, I mention bitter melon extract.

Katie asks @ 01:19:50 She knows there are a lot of artificial sweeteners in low carb products and would like to know the pros and cons of them. She also likes to drink tea and chew gum during her morning fasts and would like to know how artificial sweeteners can effect fasting. ~ In my response, I mention this B-Fresh gum.

Matthew says @ 01:27:29On a previous podcast you mentioned that you are not a fan of the bench press and is wondering if you could expound on that and if you could suggest some alternatives.

Nutbutter says @ 00:19:28 She is a 20-something year old vegan distance runner who is wondering what role you think nut butters play in the diet of a vegan athlete. Lately she has been over-eating the Whole Foods brand cashew butter (that contains safflower oil). Do you think nut butter is necessary for a vegan athlete's nutrition? How healthy do you consider them to be?

~ In my response, I mention raw, organic nut butter.

Overactive Bladder says @ 00:27:31 She will brush her teeth, go pee and head to bed but after about 15 minutes she has to get up and pee again. Then she will wake up again in 3-4 hours and have to pee again. She had a cross-country running coach that told her "if you're not waking up in the night needing to go to the bathroom, you're not hydrated enough" and she things maybe that stuck with her. She drinks a lot of water, spaced out during the day, not specifically before bed and never has this type of urgency during the day.

~ In my response, I mention these sleep resources: Sleep Pack, Sleep Add-Ons, Sleep Gear.

Jeremy says @ 00:35:52 When he eats, he tries to get in a good amount of fats, protein and carbs - for good nutrition - but as soon as he finishes eating, and onward between meals, he is always craving all types of food. Sugary or salty. And he usually gives in to the cravings. He takes Chromium but that only helps with the sugar cravings.

~ In my response, I mention Metametrix ION profile for micronutrient testing, Is being hungry bad, and also the follow helpful carb craving resources: -VIDEO: 5 Powerful Calorie Control Tricks To Help You Eat Less Food. -VIDEO: 5 Ways To Suppress Your Appetite Without Taking Any Special Pills or Capsules. -PODCAST: How To Stop Carbohydrate Cravings In Their Tracks. -PODCAST: Inner Circle Free Episode: How To Stop Sugar & Carbohydrate Cravings In Their Tracks. -ARTICLE: A Simple Six-Step System for Eliminating Food Cravings. -ARTICLE: How To Fight Candy Cravings.

Steven asks @ 00:45:28 He would like to know more about collagen supplements for joints and ligaments - specifically Type 2 Collagen. What do the studies say about it being absorbed? Is it helpful? How regularly do you need to take it? He is 49 and he likes working out. He is hoping this will help with overall tendon and ligament strength.

~ In my response, I mention Capraflex, also bioactive collagen peptides, and great lakes gelatin.

Tom says @ 00:49:33 Every memorial day weekend he does a camping trip near a river and the pollen and mold kills his allergies. His nose gets congested and his eyes water. He has tried over the counter remedies but those don't mix well with adult beverages (put him down for the count). What would you recommend he do.

~ I recommend magnesium, vitamin C, and this podcast with Dr. David Minkoff on kids, asthma and allergies.

Brandon asks @ 00:55:18 I recently started brewing beer at home, and wanted to know if there are any health benefits to non pasteurized brew. On the same note, I lift weights regularly and have heard alcohol is detrimental to muscle hypertrophy. I don't drink every day and when I do it's usually only one or two beers.
